Lots of Scraps
I finished thirty-six 6 1/2 inch scrappy string blocks and haven’t put a dent in my small scraps pile. I use muslin or old ugly fabric instead of paper to piece these on. Not only does it save me a lot of time when it comes to removing paper but if I want a summer quilt I can leave the batting out and have a decent weighted quilt that is lighter for summer use. If I use batting it then is even warmer because of the extra layer of fabric.
I”m going to assemble them to make a quilt with three 12 inch blocks across and three 12 inch blocks down. I’m going to put a 2 inch sashing between the blocks and then add 3 inch boarder. I’m not sure yet but I’m either going to use black or a grey for the sashing and backing. I’ve used black before on a string quilt and really liked the look. It made the colors pop.
Once I get this one completed I plan on starting another scrappy quilt right away. I’m not sure what block I’ll make but I have a couple of “maybe’s” in mind. I’ve never done a signature quilt and think that would be fun. Actually I’d like to make two. One for the signatures of my students and another one for church family. We’ll see. I do know for sure that I want to make a quilt using a block I’ve never attempted before.
I also finish the number 7 scrappy Shoo Fly block. Even though they are “scrappy” I’m trying to stay with shades and patterns of reds, whites and blues. I “think” I’ll use a dark navy blue for sashing and backing. I won’t decide for sure until I lay out the block and audition a couple of different colors.
You want to know a secret? It’s very difficult for me to do just one of these blocks a day. I’m impatient and want to make them all in one or two days. Even though I’m working on many other things I struggle to stick with the “one a day plan”. lol
Well, it’s getting late and I still have lots to do before I go to bed. Tomorrow is another day and already I have a LONG list of things I want to do.
Sweet dreams everyone…………….
