File this under–Things That Drive Me Crazy

Today three different news broadcasters (that I’m sure get paid huge salaries), each covering 3 different issues about 3 different politicians on 3 different news stations pronounced the word “important” as if it’s spelled with only one T.

they pronounced it
Impor – unt leaving out the 1st “T’ .

I’m not sure why this bothers me but the
word is impor-Tant.

To me hearing it mispronounced is like hearing fingernails scraping on a chalkboard .

Other words that are often mispronounced that irritate me:

ask not aks

February not FEB-yoo-air-ee

Library not LI-berry

mayonnaise not May-nays

I’m not the word police and I know there are words I
mispronounce.
Most of us speak in the same way our family spoke. Occasionally I still say arn instead of iron because that’s how I heard it pronounced growing up. When I do I immediately catch it because it bothers me.
